In Memoriam: Dr. Anoosh Major

With deep regret, we have learned of the passing of Dr. Anoosh Major (1931 – 2025, née Simelofian), pioneering ophthalmologist, devoted mother and lifelong advocate for service, on November 25th in London. Born in Tehran, Dr. Major graduated from Tehran University Medical School in 1956 and became the first officially- trained female Armenian ophthalmologist in Iran. In 1958, she completed specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, focusing on ophthalmic pathology, a field still emerging in Iran. Returning home, she joined the university faculty and opened a successful private practice in 1959. By the early 1970s, she had become a respected medical leader and co-founded one of Iran’s first private hospitals.

During the upheaval of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Dr. Major skillfully safeguarded her practice and independence, resigning from government roles before political tensions escalated. In 1981, after the onset of the Iran-Iraq War, she left Iran to protect her daughters and build a new life in London. She practiced at Moorfields Hospital until her retirement in 1992.

Dr. Major served in leadership positions in various Armenian community organizations, including the Armenian Church and Community Trust (ACCC), the Benlian Trust and Hay Doon Trust, among others. Dr. Major was one of the founders of the Armenian Medical Association of Great Britain (also known as the British Armenian Health Association). Her professional knowledge and philanthropy supported healthcare and education in Armenia, including projects in Meghri, Vanadzor, and Karabagh.

Dr. Major is survived by her two daughters, their husbands, and five grandchildren. Her legacy embodies resilience, service, and steadfast dedication to Armenian heritage. Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 15th at the Putney Vale Cemetery in London.
