Feedbacks

Gayanne Tevosyan
“I last participated in the AAHPO CME training in 2016. After the displacement, my CME (Continuing Medical Education) credits were insufficient, but you gave me two chances to join the program and retain my job. I am truly grateful for that opportunity.”

Anush Gharamyan
“After being displaced, I participated in the program twice. It helped me refresh my knowledge and adapt more easily to my new workplace.”

Hasmik Ghahramanyan
“The program was as vital to me as air and water. I was able to participate without obstacles, and with the support of kind and professional trainers, I completed the training and returned to work.”

A simple story, one of hundreds

Her New Role Gave Meaning After Displacement
Margarita Hasratyan, a 45-year-old pediatrician, has spent her life caring for children with warmth, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to their well-being. Before being forced to leave Stepanakert in September 2023, Margarita worked at the Arevik Medical Center, where her dedication left a lasting impact on countless young lives.

“I always dreamed of being a pediatrician,” Margarita shares, her voice gentle but resolute. “Children are such friendly and generous souls. Helping them brings me a joy that words can’t describe.”

Margarita continues her work at the AGBU Claudia Nazarian Polyclinic in Yerevan, where she provides care to displaced families from Artsakh and Syria. This journey began after she completed the AAHPO-CME Program, which included a four-week training at Arabkir Medical Center. The program equipped her with the credentials to advance her practice and expand her impact.

“If it weren’t for AAHPO-CME, I wouldn’t be working right now,” she admits. “After we were displaced, my family was living in a rented house, barely making ends meet. My husband and I had no income, and we had two children to support. AAHPO-CME’s support came at a time when we desperately needed it. Without them, I truly don’t know where we’d be.”

This isn’t the first time Margarita turned to AAHPO-CME for help. Back in 2018, while still in Artsakh, she participated in the CME program as well. “Retraining is essential for doctors,” she 15 explains. “Medicine evolves so quickly that staying updated is the only way to provide the best care for our patients.”

These days, Margarita sees far fewer patients—just three or four a day compared to the 25 she once treated in Artsakh. But her devotion remains steadfast. At the Polyclinic, she not only provides medical care but also offers the emotional support displaced families so urgently need.

“This clinic is a lifeline for so many,” Margarita says. “I understand what my patients are going through because I’ve lived it myself. This work isn’t just about treating illnesses; it’s about restoring hope and providing comfort in moments of profound loss. I am here for them, however they need me.”

Many families from Artsakh continue to seek her care even now. Some travel from nearby regions just to see her. “No matter the hour, they know they can call me. They trust that I’ll always be there for them.” 16

Gayane Tevosyan
ENT Specialist
Stepanakert Republican Medical Center

Dr. Gayane Tevosyan, 47, started her career more than two decades ago as an ENT specialist at Stepanakert Republican Medical Center. Back then, she served around 90 patients per day, covering night shifts in Stepanakert and nearby areas. “I often worked at night as we had a huge gap in ENT specialists. However, I liked it and would do it repeatedly if needed,” said Gayane, who has resettled in Yerevan since the September 19 attack by the Azeris.

While her professional journey began in Artsakh, Gayane’s desire to enhance her skills led her to embrace continuous learning. In 2016, she participated in the AAHPO, Dr. Raffy Hovanessian Medical Education Program (above, Gayane is holding her graduation certificate from the program), an initiative to provide healthcare professionals with opportunities to expand their knowledge and expertise. Gayane’s first experience with the program, hosted at Erebuni Medical Center, was a revelation, introducing her to new insights, particularly in ear-related procedures.

Encouraged by the enriching experience and to distract herself from psychological traumas, Gayane has recently been enrolled in the ENT training program at the Astghik Medical Center in Yerevan. The program exposed her to cutting-edge techniques, including endoscopy and various methodologies not previously practiced in Artsakh.

Gayane emphasizes the importance of ongoing education for doctors, citing the information acquired during retraining sessions that significantly contribute to patient care: “Being retrained is crucial for every doctor,” Gayane affirmed, “It equips us with the latest knowledge on treating patients, explaining medical complexities to them and developing effective therapeutic tactics. I am eager to apply for the program again.”

The AAHPO, Dr. Raffy Hovanessian Medical Education Program was initially introduced in 2011 within Artsakh. The program has now been extended to include healthcare providers who were displaced from Artsakh to Armenia. Currently, AAHPO is assisting the physicians with finding employment and resettling in Armenia. AAHPO is trying to prevent a “brain drain” of talented Armenian physicians. “We want these physicians to continue to practice and contribute to the health of Armenians in Armenia and not leave Armenia during this most turbulent time,” noted AAHPO President Lawrence V. Najarian, MD.

“Honestly, nowadays, when nothing is free, I did not believe such a humanitarian project could exist. After applying, I had little hope to be invited to Yerevan. I was extremely excited: first of all, it was a great opportunity to deepen my professional knowledge, and second, it presented the perfect occasion to spend one month in my homeland.”

Ananikyan LilitAnanikyan Lilit
General Therapist
Javakhk, Ninozminda Hospital

Lilit Ananikyan from Javakhk, was born in 1977 in Satia, which is in the Ninotsminda region of Georgia. After graduating from secondary school, she was admitted to the Yerevan Institute of Traditional Medicine, where she went to medical school.

Upon her return to her native town, Lilit worked at the greatly understaffed and under resourced Ninotsminda Emergency Center. The center uses two old cars as ambulances and they have only one stretcher. As manager of the medical ambulatory department, she constantly deals with less than adequate conditions, including no heat during the winter.

In comparison, medical centers in Yerevan are vastly different. During May, Lilit was able to experience this again when she trained at the Cardiology Department of Yerevan Medical University’s #1 Clinic, under supervision of her mentor Professor Hamayak Sisakian.

Lilit also found the one-week training for emergency service physicians she attended to be extremely helpful. She was able to get acquainted with new equipment and at the same time gain skills. Also during that month, she managed to complete a computer skills training at the Eva Educational Center in Yerevan.

She hopes to apply her new knowledge in her practice upon her return. She also believes that she will be able to bring about more effective results if the Ninotsminda center has access to modern equipment. Of course, she also hopes for continued support, which has so far greatly supported her medical center through the donation of medical supplies.

“This training program created new opportunities for new network, also provided with huge information on updated professional innovations/ technologies. It is important that, thanks to the program and the new network, we have now access to information on all conferences, seminars and medical events. I could never imagine that free training in our country could be so effective, informative and saturated. This even more inspires with high responsibility/ obliges us to improve our health service quality. Thus, the training also conveys the culture of benevolence. We realize that we don’t pay for the training and highly appreciate the great opportunity and accomplishment.”
